Do I need winter tires for my new subaru?

I have the Yoko Avids on my Camry. Awesome 3 season tire. They kinda stink in icy/slippery conditions. Especially compared to a good winter tire. My confidence level went WAY up after getting a set of Blizzaks and seeing first hand the difference they make in gripping the road. The ice conditions and proximity of very large trees to the road (growing where most states you find a gravel shoulder) is what convinced me to spring for the winter tires. What a HUGE difference they make for stopping and control on icy curves…

You could wait and see how your car works on snow with its present tires. If you want better snow and ice performance AND you like the car well enough to keep it for a few years, THEN buy winter tires on steel rims and do the switchover each fall and spring.

I did this with my present car, a 1999 Honda Civic EX. Liked the car, not its winter performance. It’s on its second set of winter tires, purchased from Tirerack. I am a satisfied customer.
