If your motor is too small to do what Tardis suggests, then downshift to whatever gear keeps the motor in a reasonable range at 50 mph (say, 3000-3500 rpm perhaps) and brake intermittantly. Not all motors will be able to hold their vehicles back to 50mph on a very steep grade.
