Does anyone know the best procedure in removing the 5 forward transmission pan bolts – they are somewhat blocked by the metal cross member that is bolted to the frame by 3 large bolts on each side. Should this cross member be removed to makie it easier to get to those 5 transmission pan bolts?

Yes. Just support the rear of the transmission with a floor jack prior to removing the crossmember.
