The only vehicles that could be towed with an automatic were the ones with rear pumps. In my 59 t-bird owners manual, it states that vehicle may be towed up to 50 miles at a maximum speed of 35 mph with rear wheels on the ground.
You had to make sure the transmission was in neutral or you would be spinning the engine once it reached 20 MPH ( push start speed ).

Well, just one more testimony, I turned off the ignition going downhill, last night, leaving the transmission in Drive, and as I aproached a red light, I turned ON the ignition and the engine fired up. The power brakes nor the power steering failed.
The time that it was Off was 47 seconds. So I know now that a torque converter CAN push, turn, reverse drive, engine brake, whatever you want to call it.
