We are shopping for a small suv or minivan that can haul passengers comfortably and also tow a trailer with a couple of 750 lb. motorcycles. Most of the time it will just be driven with 1 or 2 people in it, so we are looking for the best possible mileage for daily use. Anyone have any suggestions? Right now the Rav4 is on the top of the list.

Read up on the RAV4, especially in reguards to how it behaves in a moderate to strong crosswinds. I wouldn’t own one if it were given to me. Try looking at the Jeep Compass or Patriot. Or maybe a Honda CRV.
As to what you’re towing. Would you consider another outdoor sport that doesn’t waste gas?

Astro’s and Safari"s were rated at 3,500 lbs. probably doesn’t fit your mileage condition.
