I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 automatic. Can you tell me if I have a three or four speed automatic if I have two drive gears and one 1st gear. Is this a three or four speed?

I know my 91 Taurus was a 4 speed automatic. It was a 4 speed for either the 3.0 or 3.8. I don’t remember if I had 2nd gear on the column shifter or not. I remember driving a 1990 Mustang with an automatic that only had selections for 1st (L), 3rd (D), and 4th (OD) on the floor shifter.

Your transmission is definitely a 4-speed unit.

But, if you don’t want to take my word for it, I suggest that you consult your Owner’s Manual. That little book contains information regarding the positions on the shift quadrant, the operation of your transmission, the correct type of transmission fluid to use, and a wealth of other valuable information about your car.

Your Owner’s Manual can answer definitively.

You also probably have an Overdrive. That makes it a 4 speed. Although others would argue that any gear beyond a 1:1 ratio doesn’t count.
