I remember the Toyota Starlet and Datsun 1200 very well. Another small Datsun was the F-10. I had a friend who purchased one of these cars brand new in 1977. The car was a front wheel drive with a 5 speed manual transmission. I drove the car on a 100 mile trip and it was a barrel of fun.

Yup. I remember when the car commercials hyped “longer, lower, wider” year after year after year. Even then it seemed ridiculous, and that was long before I could drive.
