I “👍” up the items In your list that I’m alright with.

I don’t know what “BEV” or “EPB” even stand for, so no comment.

Other don’t approves:

- Slits for windows
- Giant infotainment touch screens
- Rubber bands for tires mounted on wheels big & wide enough for commercial airliners..!

I am not going to tell you what they are. If you can’t use the web search engines I am not going to do it for you.

I’m sure another human being here will explain what those stand for. I try not to rely on Google or AI for everything.

I’m new here & not trying to start a fight, but you seem to think technology has never failed us & auto-makers have never lied to us. I just don’t get that.

Again: Elon lied about Tesla’s capabilities. People died as a result. Even if you are “all in,” can you see where some folks still have doubts? (And speaking as a guy whose 1st car was a Ford Pinto, I know this type of thing isn’t new).

I do not think all of these advancements are bad, but you seem to be labeling any skeptic as a “technophobe”.

Oh for heavens sake kids, EPB is electronic parking brake. If you ever had your brake freeze in the winter, its embarrassing. BEV is battery electric vehicle which doesnt really apply to the discussion.

A real-life example (or two) of how much people rely on, or think they need, driver assist systems to successfully operate a car.

A car was a candidate for lemon law buyback. The issue was that once or twice a week the backup camera wouldn’t display on the screen.

Question: “How does that affect your ability to safely operate the car?”

Answer: “I need the camera to tell if I’ve pulled into the garage far enough to roll the door down.”

A pickup owner filed for lemon law relief because the navigation system would sometimes go blue screen.

Q: “How does that affect your ability to safely operate the vehicle?”

A: “I was going to Costco and the nav screen went blank so I turned around and went back home.”

You’re pretty new here, so you may not be aware that a couple of forum members seem to distrust _all_ new automotive technologies, and they insist that the high point of automotive technology was in the '70s & '80s. Clearly, anything _can_ fail, and newer technologies need some time until they become extremely reliable, but some people seem to automatically reject _anything_ that is “new”–even when it has been used for several years.

But, this is not a new phenomenon. When Chrysler was the first mfr to include 4 wheel hydraulic brakes in a moderately-priced car, there were people who believed that these brakes were dangerous because they stopped a car “too quickly”, and b o d i l y injury would be the result of “stopping too fast”. According to my undergraduate Psych professor, in the early '50s, there was a contingent who claimed that automatic transmissions would cause a driver’s left leg to atrophy, because he wasn’t using a clutch, “as G o d intended”. 😉

Going back much further, when steam trains were introduced, there was a fairly wide-spread belief that traveling more than 30 mph would cause our internal organs to “turn to jelly”, and even traveling at 20 mph would cause “railway spine” and other health problems. A bit later, the introduction of electric lighting caused some people to claim that “brain fatigue” would be the result, and that it was much healthier to use gas lighting (along with the carbon monoxide that it can produce).

Much more recently, some people avoided a certain vaccine because they believed that it contained microchips, and that a certain disease was spread via 5G technology. There is nothing wrong with “healthy” skepticism, but the automatic rejection of anything new is an age-old human behavior that frequently has no basis in reality, and which can actually be… unhealthy.

Thank you bing.

I’ve heard of it referred to as ‘E-brake’, yes.

Yes, I’m younger than most of you, but younger doesn’t always mean ‘more accepting’ of newer technologies. Or being more competent at deciphering this new abbreviation-based language people speak these days.

E brake is (or used to be anyway) an abbreviation to describe the Emergency Brake, so in short form it is called the E Brake…

EPB is the acronym for electronic parking brake…

Honestly I haven’t, but EV’s aren’t as popular in my area of the world as others… I see a hand full of EV’s, but mostly I know what they are from seeing them on this form from time to time, or they are Tesla’s and they just have a distinct look…

I see Hybrid and or PHEV on the back of some vehicles, but don’t remember seeing BEV or HEV on any…

In order to make consumers more aware of the type of vehicles that they might see on the street, last year Toyota changed the model name of one of their PHEVs. The Rav-4 Prime is now the Rav-4 PHEV.

With all due respect, that could be said about most of the stuff asked on this forum, if everybody had the mentality of you need to google (or whatever search engine) it 1st, then nobody would be asking questions, and this forum would be all but useless…
People use forums to ask questions cause they don’t trust search engines, or want confirmation that the search engine was correct…

With my simplistic mind and desire to not over-think stuff, I always lumped them together as the same thing.

In fact, among my family and friends, some call the same thing the “Emergency Brake”, others, the “Parking Brake”(electronic or dinosaur version!)

An emergency brake and a parking brake are two different names for the exact same mechanical system in your vehicle…

While the industry has largely shifted to using the term “parking brake” because its primary job is to keep a stationary vehicle from rolling, the system was historically engineered as a backup “emergency” stopping method…

I have driven vehicles with a blown out wheel cylinder while only using the E-brake to slow/stop the vehicle, to get back home or to the shop…

The EPB is just a means of applying the E-brake/parking brake…

Thank you!

That’s what I was trying to say in my own convoluted, effed-up way. Man if I’d spent more time outside the house as a teen learning how to talk to other people …!

It is commonly referred to as a parking brake - If the hydraulics on the normal brakes fail - people are going to use the parking brake. They’re not (at least people with an IQ over 50) sit there and think - " Well I can’t use the parking brake because that’s only for parking".
