what are the major things to check after fluids, belts , air filters afterthe check engine cvomes on? There is no difference in how the car runs even at highway speeds.

Scan the computer to see what set the code. It won’t hurt to look under the hood if you get a “check engine” light but if you find something amiss under the hood it probably set off your battery,oil pressure,temp light.

A “check engine” light is not a prompt to check under the hood,you should be doing this without a “check engine” light.

Check engine lights are primairly related to malfunctioning emission gear.

You need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Most auto parts stores will do this free.

Without the codes there’s no way to know why the Check Engine Light is on. There are MANY possible reasons.

The Check Engine Light is an early warning system, not an indication of impending doom. It lets you know a problem is developing. If you take care of the problem promptly it usually costs a lot less than if you ignore the light.

Year, engine, and mileage, among other things, might be helpful to know.

 That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code (like P0123) not just their translation into English and post it back here.

```
Regarding warning lights:
1. if the coolant temp light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
2. if the oil warning light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
3. if a FLASHING MIL/CEL comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
But if the MIL/CEL is not flashing, then it’s not an urgent indicator.
