I need to replace the high pressure hose just above the rack. The drivers side of the hose is accessible (17mm), but I’m concerned about the other side. After removing the two cross members, will I need to remove the shaft with the tie rod end ? I hear you need a special tool for the inner tie rod end.The up side by the P.S. pump looks very crowded with A/C hoses . should I change the pump too ? (135K) Thanks, Mike

Sorry but it seems you are trying too hard. Where is the other end of the hose you need to get at? You should not need to remove crossmembers at all. It seems like you are not really trying to do he hose but a different job. More details?

It goes toward the pass side just above the rack up against the firewall and connects to a metal tube from the pump. It’s barely visible from above with all the vacuum and a/c hoses. the haynes book says to take off the cross members. This seems to be the best way tho I wonder if the steering shaft (w the tie rod end) will be in the way…

“It goes toward the pass side just above the rack up against the firewall and connects to a metal tube from the pump.”

That metal tube from the pump is part of the hose…There will be a fitting where the hose (tube) connects to the P.S. pump. P.S. service on FWD cars can be difficult…

If I need to remove the tie rod shaft (for lack of what to call it) do I need a special tool for the inner tie rod end…also a special (brakeline type wrench) so I don’t damage the fitting nut? …Mike (thanks for your help Caddyman - you are very high on my respect list next to Tester and OK44 something) I don’t like FWD And would have kept buying Celicas if they didn’t stop the RWD in '85 tho they did on the 6 cyl Supras

The power steering hose at the pump is a banjo fitting. You should be able to feel at the top of the pump the banjo bolt that holds this fitting onto the pump. Don’t forget to replace the two brass seals for this fitting.

Thanks Tester, Does that mean that you recommend changing the pump also (135K)? Has anyone done this without taking off the tie rod (or maybe just the tie rod end… and push the rod out of the way a bit.
