Agree with Tester and Purbred… get a Leak Down Test!!
If they didn’t do that and say you need an engine take it to someone else.

If it has never overheated or run low on engine oil, and less than 200K miles, could well be something relatively easy to repair. By relatively easy I mean in the $2000 range, not $8000 or more for a replacement engine.
