From what I have read, it seems to be about the demand for diesel, especially in countries that promote it’s use, like Europe. The depressed economics in those countries and reduced consumption has a more positive affect on prices here on diesel than on gasoline. Diesel follows the money.
It’s about time! I worked on the “Hill” in the '70s and watched Detroit lobbyists fight safety and mpg standards. Foreign cars complied or exceeded the standards and enjoyed success. Now Detroit grovels for $$ to stay alive.
What’s the big deal? There were Japanese cars in the early '80s getting better than 40mpg and that was gas-only. Sure, they didn’t have air bags but with advances in technology we ought to be able to design something safe AND efficient.
Thank god we finally have Obama
who will make good things happen
for the children and Polar Bears.
For starters, I’m all for the government using regulatory powers to help control energy usage, which ultimately is in the national interest and amounts to one aspect of energy policy. I’m also in favor of the government using it’s powers to protect the environment. If this is what it takes to force a reduction in U.S. consumers frivolous use of valuable resources, I’m all for it.
Secondly, I currently drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla w/ 5 speed manual transmission that regularly gets 40+ mpg on the highway. So it’s possible now.
Lastly, this country was headed in this direction 25 years or so ago, and then the wonderful 80’s and deregulation came in, and collectively everyone seems to have forgotten where we where back then. Chrysler was going bankrupt the first time and Japanese cars began to rule the roads while the U.S. cars languished.
I don’t care if we require 40MPG. But I’d like to see gasoline at 4 bucks a gallon again. Or a heavy fee for gas guzzlers. That’s the only thing that affects most peoples energy usage, bottom line cost. Whatever it takes to get us to be responsible re: long term energy use. And no, I’m not independently wealthy, quite the opposite. Energy is a precious commodity and should be used wisely.
Does anybody have a breakdown on just how the #1300.00 figure was compiled? I need to see just what is reflected in this figure, reasearch the argument, until then it is just so much retoric.
Hours after the fuel standards came out one political party was crying about how many hundreds will die because of the standards, show me the money, put up or shut up,you get it. Its all spin and everyone has their own interest. One party’s interest is to prove that absolutely nothing, I mean nothing the President is doing or will do is the right thing to do,one guy makes a living talking smack about the President 6 days a week day after day.
Fact is your “guys” were in political office and had the power in America for years and they screwed it up.
Um, let me see. When your guys were in power last time, how many times did terrorists attack us, vs. how many times since Bush realized what we are really dealing with?
The reason this nation is screwed up is because the citizens are demanding more and more and more. Politicians of every party to survive must give it to them, or be tossed out.
You guys are going to learn a lot very soon.
Who uses more fuel; a person who drives 35k miles a year with a vehicle that gets 50mpg, or a person who drives 5k a year in a vehicle that gets 20 mpg?
