Here’s a crash between a '26 and a '96 Blazer. Guess which wins:

avoiding wrecks whether caused by myself or others has resulted in more than 1 million accident free miles in more varied circumstances than I wish to bore anyone with.

So, once again, _The Good Old Days_ weren’t very good.

Wasn’t really designed for the offset tests, believe it was the same platform as 83-94 used just redesigned for 95. Comments on other sites questioned why a decade newer trailblazer Wasn’t used.

I for one am not pining for the good old days where income barely covered expenses, or cars were shot at 100k, or 5000 mile tune ups, 10-12 hour days, 8-15% interest, and on and on and on. Yes if you run into a telephone pole in a new car, you have a better chance than doing it in a 59 Pontiac. The point is and always has been avoidance. Better roads help as well as seat belts, crush zones, air bags, and safety glass reduce injuries. But I remain bewildered as consumers compare crash results to guide their purchases and forget about never needing these devices. I have managed to have only one serious accident in my youth and yes have lost friends or family in accidents. If enginesvend up in front seats the results are not pretty, but crash tests are fairly meaningless to me.

I think you can also add being somewhat lucky. My good friend who has driven for years without an accident has had his 2 year old Lexus hit twice ( No injuries fortunatly ) in the last year while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

Yes I understand feeling helpless at a red light, but the response from the Minnesota safety council after reviewing one of our accident reports suggested this was not an excuse. If you park at a light far enough back to see the tires on the car ahead, you have room to maneuver. If you watch your mirror for people coming up behind and have tried to keep an open lane on the side of you, your odds are improved. Yeah and I had a guy slide into me at a light, on ice. But my 74 cutlass with heavy bumpers only got a small dent in the bumper. Back when they had bumpers in the good old days. Compared to $3000 damage when a lady backed into my plastic bumper in the drive through lane.

The part of the car you see isn’t the bumper. It’s the cosmetic part that covers the actual impact beam behind it, that gets smashed and is so expensive to replace(when you include painting to match the covering to surrounding elements).

Yeah, ive replaced bumper covers before and painted them and actually repaired them. I know whats behind them. Been around the block a few times.

The vast majority of people since the 1990s call them ‘bumpers’, so you are not alone.
