Car has had four instances over the past month where it starts, but only after a few attempts. The battery is good, although it is the original (5 years old). The ambient temperature has been over 60 degrees F. Otherwise, no issues. Could this be a starter motor beginning to fail?

Unlikely, a bad starter would not crank the engine.
Need for multiple attempts to start problem is usually fuel or spark related.
A proper diagnosis is needed. The repair **might** be covered by your power train warranty.
At five years, I would replace the battery, but that’s me, I replace mine at around four years. But I don’t think either the battery or starter is the problem. Either would produce a no crank situation, rather than your crank, no start problem.
