If my volt meter stays above 14v for a long time. At least an hour before it drops, does this men that my battery is not charging properly? My concern is that if my battery is not holding a charge, am I over working the alternator?

There is surface charge. With the car off, turn your headlights on high beams for 2 minutes. Turn them off, then check battery voltage. Or check the battery voltage after car has been sitting a few hours.
