The check engine light comes on when there is a problem with a system. when you fix that system, the light will go out after a few drive cycles. you can go to most Autopart’s stores, and they will scan your vehicle for free. ask them for the codes and then post them here and we can help you determine what the problem is or are. you can look in your owner’s manual and it will show you symbols other than the check engine light and what they mean. examples…low tire warning or traction control is on or off, ABS problem

That would be the automotive equivalent of erasing images of broken bones from an X-ray.

+1
First, determine exactly which Diagnostic Trouble Codes have been stored by the vehicle’s OBD system, and then have the apparent problems repaired. After a few drive cycles, the lights will turn themselves off, and the underlying problem that caused them to turn on in the first place will have been resolved.

Yes, but in almost all cases the CEL will just turn back on after 20 or 30 miles of driving. In oher words , that method, other than providing a brief respite, is usually just a waste of time. The powertrain computer is testing stuff all the time you drive, and when it finds something out of whack it doesn’t turn the CEL on immediately in most cases . Instead it watches for a while to see if the problem goes away by itself. If the problem remains for 20 or 30 miles, then it turns the CEL on.

If you just don’t want to see the CEL on the display panel, no matter the adverse ramifications, you could put a piece of black tape over it. If you want to do something yourself, visit an auto parts shop that provides free diagnostic code reading. Then post the diagnostic codes here. Whenever the CEL is on, there’s diagnostic code in the computer memory. That code number will provide a clue to what the problem is.
