My 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with a 5.7 Hemi makes a popping sound everytime I shift out of park into neutral or reverse or drive. What could cause this?

Bad motor mount, cracked exhaust, poorly adjusted shift linkage and a dozen other things.

Where does the noise originate? In, Under, Engine compartment? What kind of popping sound is it? High pitch? Low Pitch? How many miles on it? Might help narrow it down for folks on the internet that can’t actually hear it.
