My Pontiac has 59000 miles on it and lately it has developed an intermittent noise. The noise happens when braking at low speeds and sounds like a recording of whale talk (without the clicks or whistles, i.e. an echo-y groan in a hollow metal container). It is not the screech-y brake caliper sound. I really can’t tell where it is coming from, but if I had to guess it would be the front wheels. It doesn’t happen all the time and I don’t seem to be able to recreate the noise. I have not had any recent repairs on the wheels or tires. I’m planning a road trip in July and would really like to know what it is and if it needs to be fixed before I leave. Any ideas?

Get your brakes checked before your trip. It may be nothing, but on the other hand you don’t want to find it was something when you really need them.

As it turned out, the front brake rotors were out of round causing the brakes to pulsate. In addition, the the front hub and bearing was loose and had some play.
