2003 Mercedes CLK 430 problems

Seriously ?? You want to put your son in a used European luxury vehicle that could have expensive repairs ?

Yes, the problem was eventually discovered. It turns out a sensor for the drive by wire throttle (which is an usual setup compared to most throttle by wire cars) had a fault that would only manifest itself if you gave the car more than 60% throttle. If you gave it more than 60% throttle, it would go into limp home mode until the code was reset. Once that sensor was replaced, the car has been bulletproof. Nothing else has failed, even the A/C still works well, power top works like a charm, etc. Just oil changes, brakes. and tires. Mom still has the car, it has about 160k miles on it now. With that said, Iā€™m sure when a big ticket item fails, sheā€™ll get rid of it.

The sensor youā€™re talking about . . . was it the pedal position sensor?

The one thatā€™s in the engine bay, connected to the pedal with a cable?

Yeah, that was kind of a weird drive by wire system, considering it still retained the cable connected to the accelerator pedal

IIRC the sensor was located down in the near the dead pedal sort of to the left of where your left foot would be. I could be wrong though, it was a few years ago.
