So, when a cruise control doesn’t work, what’s the first few things to check?

I just purchased the car, so I don’t know symptomatic history. The previous owner said he didn’t use it, so he didn’t know it was broken.

A likely story.

Check the fuse first. Look under the hood for something obvious, like a disconnected cable or hose.

A faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS) will prevent the cruise from working. Does the speedometer work correctly?

The first thing to check is if all the brake lights work. If there’s a brake light out the cruise control won’t function.
