Is the “check engine” light on? It could be so many things, so little info to go on. Why do you suspect the cat?

I think the noise that it is making. It was rattling and then would lose compression,The check engine light has been on but were able to reset. We need to take it in but trying to find a reliable and honest mechanic.

I doubt if it is the converter.

That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code (like P0123) not just their translation into English and post it back here.
