1990 Toyota Pickup 4x4 manual transmission difficulties - trouble shifting into 1st from a dead stop

Just start out in second gear, and wait till something else breaks. Had that same truck and did it often in winter snow. First gear is hosed, you can live without it.

I wholeheartedly agree with Rod and the others, but would add that until you get this corrected (which you should do asap) you may want to start out in second gear. It really isn’t that tough, especially with an empty bed, once you get the hang of it. Just don’t try it while pulling your 25’ wooden cabin cruiser out of the lake or you’ll fry your clutch and probably put a few shiny black+blue spots on the flywheel. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Having owned several British cars with no 1st gear synchro I developed the habit of always shifting to 2nd then to first. If nothing else this could make things easier on the transmission until OP can diagnose the actual problem.
