1965 Ford thunderbird 390 cu

Ford has the electrical contact solenoid mounted on the fenderwell not on the starter. Easy to replace.

Hi Fellas, when I replaced the solenoid, I sanded the area where the solenoid bracket would make contact to the radiator support, sanded the sheet metal screws where they make contact to the bracket and mounted. Although as through as we are it still wasn’t enough of a grounded circuit, because when I added a THHN 12 awg stranded wire and ring terminals, one end at the solenoid base and screw and the other directly on the negative clamp post of the battery she fired right up! Thank you All very much!

Thanks for the feedback, it helps us to know we are on the right track.

I’d suggest that you check the ground wire from the neg batt post to the body and the ground strap that goes from the engine to the firewall. I suspect that one of those is bad, more likely the one between the engine and the flywheel.

Other issues that you will see when this cable is bad is headlights dimming, especially at idle with the blower motor running. Also static on the radio.

Re: Improving starter relay ground is solution.

Good for you for getting to the bottom of it. You mention above you used dielectric grease. Remember that grease is an insulator, doesn’t improve current conduction. Intended to help prevent further corrosion.

I would track down which ground strap(s) are defective, and fix them.

Yes, but if the coating is thin enough that it won’t significantly reduce current flow and will greatly reduce oxidation. My wife’s uncle said to always coat electrical contacts with dielectric grease for that reason. He was a long time electrical program manager for Corning Glass. He travelled the US and the world buldning Corning Glass factories.

Yes, I agree with y’all, the blinkers are working but the flasher quits the clicking sound and the blinker indicator on the front fenders stops blinking when I apply the brakes. I will continue to work on the grounding circuit with yawls suggestions. Thank You.
