1952 mercury trouble, again

Is the distributor mounted down on the front of the engine, almost impossible to get to?? I would upgrade that to an electronic system and get rid of the points…otherwise, you will be fighting it continuously…

You may need to install an electric fuel pump back by the tank to overcome the vapor locking problem…If your fuel filter keeps plugging up, the gas tank is full of rust and crud and should be replaced or by-passed with a marine plastic tank in the trunk…Trying to keep these antique cars in operating condition can turn into a full-time job…

Remove the speedometer cable from the speedometer end and grease it, slide it back in and that should cure that problem…

The distributor is mounted on the front passenger side of the engine and is not too hard to get to. The tank should be in good shape as I took it off and he it lined because it was leaking. It runs great now, but, yes, I may convert it to an electronic system someday as finances allow.

The speedometer is made form a steel disc that is about the size and shape of a widemouth jar cap. Inside the disc is a bar magnet that is attached to the end of the speedometer cable. The speedometer needle is attached to the disc as well as a spring to hold the needle in the 0 mph position… As the magnet spins, it (magnetically) drags the disc and moves the needle.

The bushing that supports the magnet is worn out and allowing the magnet to occasionally touch the disc, making the noise and making the needle bounce.
