Is the cooling system being maintained at the intervals suggested in the owner’s manual? Delaying scheduled maintenance can cause this type of problem sometimes, as the coolant gets corrosive over time. Check your maintenance records. If it is past due, have the old coolant drained and replaced with fresh. Warding off head-gasket problems before they occur will save you a good deal of money. Money you can use for enjoyable summer road trips in your Mini! Best of luck OP.
