2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission

I have a 2011 Jeep GC with a 3.6 Pentastar. The only thing I don’t like is the 5 speed transmission. Would it be possible for the current 5 speed to be swapped out for one of the newer 8 speed trannies that come with the 14 and 15 GC’s with the 3.6 Pentastar?

Would it be possible, maybe/practical, NO.

New cars are much different than the 60’s. Computers run the transmission and its not just a matter of bolting another one in. Most probably even the same transmission from a car 2 years older might not work well in your car. It is cheaper to just change your car (as much as that is an expensive thing to do).

+1 for @galant because swapping engines and transmission in modern cars can open up a huge can of worms. It can be done but you must have deep pockets to accomplish the feat. Buying another vehicle is usually the cheaper option.

Concur, trading it in for a vehicle equipped the way you want it is the most economical solution.

Are you certain you want an 8 speed? The extra speeds are there not so much for performance or divability as simply to post a little better mpg. Helps the sales-force in other words. But there’s a robustness compromise. The more stuff crammed into the fixed-size transmission case, the smaller each moving part has to be. And repairing a broken automatic transmission is very expensive.

Like GeorgeSJ say’s. Low gear and Overdrive ratio’s are about the same. It’s all the in-between that keeps the engine speed at a more given speed to support better fuel economy. You’d have to by a whole bunch of fuel to make up for the cost of the swap including a ECM.
